Action Item
[] Think seriously about what you might be required to do if a violent intruder threatens your family. Decide now that fear will not prevent you from acting.
When Have We Reached Defend?
Defend begins when someone inside your home presents an immediate threat of death or serious bodily harm, and you or your family cannot safely escape or reach the safe room.
Avoidance is no longer enough. You may have to place yourself between the threat and your family and physically stop the attack.
The Reality
Most of us are peaceful people. We do not want to hurt anyone, and we should avoid violence whenever a safe alternative remains.
But there may come a moment when protecting your family requires violence.
The confrontation may happen suddenly. You may be disoriented, barefoot, half asleep, or overwhelmed by fear. The attacker may ignore commands, continue after being injured, or respond with greater violence than you expected. Your first defensive action may not stop him.
You may be injured. You may have to continue acting while frightened, hurt, or uncertain. You may have to inflict severe injury or death to stop an imminent threat.
You should confront that possibility now—not because you want it to happen, but because hesitation during a deadly attack could cost your family the time they need to escape.
The Mission
Your mission is not to punish the intruder, defend your possessions, clear the house, or prove your courage.
Your mission is to protect human life.
Create time and distance for your family to escape or reach the safe room. If necessary, put yourself between them and the threat. Use the force reasonably necessary to stop the immediate danger.
If the threat stops, you stop. If the intruder retreats or flees, do not pursue. If your family can escape, escape with them.
You are not trying to win a fight. You are trying to bring your people home alive.
The Switch
A protector must be capable of changing states quickly.
One moment, you may be a gentle father awakened from sleep. The next, you may need to act with speed, aggression, and overwhelming determination.
That is the switch.
It does not mean losing control. It means overcoming hesitation and doing what the situation requires. You remain aware of your family, your escape routes, the threat, and when the threat has ended.
A warrior is not someone eager to use violence. He is someone prepared to use it decisively when innocent life is in immediate danger—and disciplined enough to stop when it is no longer necessary.
Decide Now
You cannot know exactly how a home invasion will unfold. You should not lock yourself into one script.
But you can decide this now:
I will not abandon my family to violence. We will escape when we can, barricade when we can, and fight when we must. If protecting innocent life requires me to inflict grave injury or death, I am prepared to do it. I will act with determination, remain in control, and stop when the threat stops.
