The 5 D’s Of Home Defense – Intro
1,500 year-old techniques you can use today.
We just finished the series on the Color Code of Mental Awareness that
taught us how to stay safe when away from home. If you missed it, it’s
available on the website. Next up, we’ll address what can be done to
fortify our homes. There is a tendency to let down our guard when at
home, but the reality is that our lives can change in an instant with a swift
kick to our front door. Why has the rate of daytime home invasions
increased in the last few years? Because alarm systems have become
more commonplace and they are more likely to be set at night than during
the day. Combine this with the front door that is more likely to be
unlocked during the day and locked only at night. Far too many invaders
simple walk into an unlocked and unalarmed home. No noisy alarm or
crashing of glass needed. Incidentally, the reason is somewhat the same
with the increase of car jackings. Sophisticated car security systems have
made life more difficult for the average car thief that has been armed with
a hanger and a screwdriver. Thieves now want the security-coded key
along with the car and that key is in the car when the owner is in it.
The bad guys of today are very different animals than even a couple
decades ago. We need to learn how they have changed and adapt our
defenses accordingly. Relying on what we have always done won’t keep
our families safe now.
The “D’s” haven’t changed in 1,500 years. Through this series of articles,
you will be able to draw correlations from what has been done for
hundreds of years to things you can do at your home today. It is likely
that you would think that we can do it better in our modern day. We
cannot. We can only learn from the past and try to emulate these
techniques the best we can from a practicality point of view.
