Perimeter Alarms – Self Assessment

I have perimeter alarms set up if needed on my property.

Our first layers of detection are:

  • Video Doorbell
  • Outdoor Motion Lighting
  • Outdoor Motion Security Cameras

These systems typically alert us to movement within 50 feet of the home.

Perimeter alarms extend that detection beyond the 50-foot zone.

They notify you earlier — before someone reaches the house.

Think of it as pre-50-foot security.

When Perimeter Alarms Make Sense

Perimeter alarms are useful when your property has areas that extend well beyond your home, or specialty areas.

Examples:

  • A long driveway
  • A large yard or acreage
  • A dock or waterfront access
  • A path or ramp leading toward the house
  • A side or rear gate
  • A pool or hot tub latch

For example, when I was growing up we had a waterfront property with a dock and a long ramp leading up to the house. A perimeter alarm at the dock would have alerted us the moment someone stepped onto it.

Some models are pet-immune, meaning they only trigger on humans.

Types of Perimeter Alarms

  • Infrared beam sensors
  • Outdoor motion detectors
  • Driveway alarms
  • Fence vibration sensors
  • Laser or microwave perimeter fences

Perimeter alarms are a powerful way to extend your early warning system beyond the home itself.
