Ready to Protect

Egress Ladders

,

Action Item

[] Every upstairs bedroom in my home has an emergency escape ladder stored near the window. Basement bedrooms with high windows or deep window wells have a safe way to climb out.

Why This Matters

Depart sounds simple.

Leave the house.

Get your family out.

Get to safety.

But what if you can’t get to the front door?

What if the threat is between you and the stairs?

What if your child is upstairs and the hallway is no longer safe?

In that moment, the window may be the exit.

But only if you have a way down.

What an Egress Ladder Does

An egress ladder gives you a backup exit when the normal exits are blocked.

It is not complicated.

It is not fancy.

It is simply a way to get from an upper-level window to the ground without jumping.

For second-story bedrooms, that usually means a portable emergency ladder stored near the window.

For basement bedrooms, that may mean a window well ladder or another permanent way to climb out.

Where to Put Them

Think in terms of trapped rooms.

If someone could be stuck in that room with no safe path to an exterior door, it needs a backup exit.

Start with:

Second-story bedrooms
Kids’ rooms
Master bedroom
Guest rooms upstairs
Basement bedrooms with deep window wells

Do not store the ladder in the garage.

Do not store it in the hallway.

Store it where the person will actually need it.

The Real Test

Buying the ladder is not the win.

The win is knowing it works.

Check the window.

Does it open?

Does the screen come out?

Will the ladder hook properly?

Is the ladder long enough?

Can the person in that room actually use it?

Can they find it in the dark?

Can they deploy it under stress?

If the answer is no, you do not have an escape plan.

You have a box in a closet.

Family Plan

Every family member should know:

Where the ladder is
Which window to use
Where to go after getting out
Who helps younger children
Where the family meeting place is

This does not need to be scary.

It just needs to be clear.

Bottom Line

Depart only works if you have a way out.

If the bad guy is inside the home and you cannot safely reach an exterior door, a bedroom window may become your best exit.

An egress ladder turns that window from a dead end into an escape route.

It is simple.

It is inexpensive.

And it may give your family one more way to get out alive.
